They're the same instrument, the only difference is the sort of music being played. Violin music tends to be played in groups or as part of a larger prchestra, while fiddle music is generally played solo. Violin music emphasizes smoothness and careful bowing, while fiddle pieces are faster and tend to be rather choppy. Violins are used for classical pieces, while fiddles are for folk music, often intended for dancing.
